Marcopolo presents vehicles at Lat.Bus focusing on decarbonizing transport

The Company will present electric and hybrid vehicles, among other models, that contribute to environmental sustainability

Marcopolo, one of the world’s leading developers of mobility solutions, will unveil new vehicles at Lat.Bus 2024 in line with the global trend towards decarbonizing transport. Lat.bus is the largest event of the bus industry in Latin America, which will be held from August 6 to 8, at the São Paulo Expo.

The company will present, in total, nine models at the event with the brands Marcopolo and Volare. With the Marcopolo brand there are five models: the new Viaggio G8 1050, Paradiso G8 1200, Paradiso G8 1350 and Paradiso G8 1800 DD, all road, and the urban Attivi Integral 100% electric with an unprecedented and innovative internal configuration. Generation 8 has already sold more than four thousand units of which 2,150 are Double Decker models. In addition, 850 were destined for the international market. The success of buses in this category is due to factors such as the renewal of fleets by bus companies, which are looking to increase passenger comfort and safety. “The success of Generation 8 in Brazil and abroad is a reality. We are focused and working to launch the G8 models in most of the markets in which we operate, initially with production in Brazil, now in Mexico and Colombia, and export to countries such as South Africa, where we recently got our customers and partners together for a launch event”, says André Vidal Armaganijan, CEO of Marcopolo.

In addition to the intercity and Attivi models, the new Volare Fly 12 will also be exhibited, aimed at the charter and school segments, Attack 10 and Attack 8 Robust, in a competitive version, and the unprecedented Attack 9 Hybrid (electric/ethanol).

“This year Marcopolo completes 75 years of operation, consolidating its position as a protagonist in the development of complete mobility solutions, contributing to the advancement of passenger transport and aligned with its purpose of bringing people together. Our goal is to develop more and more products and solutions that promote the decarbonization of transport and that, at the same time, are technologically advanced, contributing to national and international mobility”, says Armaganijan.

Among the innovations presented at the event, Marcopolo highlights the hybrid and electric models, which complement the portfolio and contribute to the environmental sustainability of the sector. “In addition to the Attivi Integral model, 100% electric produced by Marcopolo, one of the innovations presented at Lat.bus will be the hybrid model that uses ethanol as a source for the generation of energy for the batteries”, he says. Marcopolo currently has around one thousand electric buses in circulation, either its own solutions or those developed in partnership with third parties. In Latin America, in addition to Brazil, the brand’s products are present in countries such as Colombia and Mexico. “In addition to electric, hydrogen-powered buses, such as the Audace Fuel Cell presented at Busworld 2023, or biomethane are some of the new energy sources studied and tested in recent times. Public programs and incentives are fundamental for these technologies to develop more and more”, Armaganijan analyses.

Marcopolo is the leader in the Brazilian bus body market. In the first half of this year, 6,201 units were produced in Brazil and 1,058 abroad. The company’s consolidated production in 2023 was 13,035 units – 83% manufactured in Brazil and 17% abroad. The consolidation of the G8 models and the product mix, including urban buses and mini buses, favor performance in the market.

Currently, the main foreign markets for Marcopolo are Latin America and the African continent. “The international presence positions the company as a global player, which increases our competitiveness and leads us to constantly innovate.  Foreign markets also offer growth opportunities in regions where demand for public transport is expanding”, concludes the executive.

Volare Vehicles at Lat.Bus

 Attack 9 Hybrid

One of Volare’s biggest innovations at Lat.Bus 2024 is the presentation of the first hybrid mini bus produced in Brazil with national technology, the Attack 9 Hybrid – Electric/Ethanol. The model is a viable solution for the decarbonization of transport and sales are expected starting in 2026, with an electric powertrain using Range Extender technology. This allows the batteries to be recharged using a generator set with a 1.0 three-cylinder flexfuel turbo engine running on ethanol. The design is the result of Volare’s partnership with HORSE, a division of HORSE Powertrain Limited, a world leader in hybrid solutions and low-emission combustion engines, and with WEG, a Brazilian multinational manufacturer of electronic equipment, which operates in the capital goods sector with a focus on motors, reducers and electric drives, generators and energy transformers, products and systems for electrification, automation and digitalization.

With a high degree of nationalization, the vehicle combines advantages and benefits of a conventional micro powered by diesel and a 100% electric vehicle powered by batteries. The energy that powers the electric motor is generated by an ethanol engine, that is why the vehicle can be used in any region of the country, contributing to the ecosystem, as it is neutral in the CO2 cycle and allows carbon credits to be obtained. The model also stands out for its autonomy, which can reach 450km, and the reduced volume occupied by only three packs of batteries, which store 122kWh, providing greater capacity for transporting people.

Fly 12

Volare Fly 12 creates a new category of vehicles and is considered a true “super micro” bus. With a total length of 11,730mm, width of 2,480mm and height of 3,330mm, the model has the capacity to carry up to 45 passengers, in addition to the driver and assistant driver, with efficiency and driveability, with reduced acquisition and operational costs. In the school bus configuration, it can transport 64 students, as well as a driver and assistant driver.

Attack 8 Robust

By designing the Attack 8 in a competitive configuration, Volare is breaking yet another market paradigm by offering a small, versatile model that represents lower acquisition and operating costs and delivers robustness, agility and reliability. With only 6,535 mm in total length and a capacity for 17 passengers, it is suitable for transport in severe applications, such as the different industrial and rural areas of northern and northeastern Brazil, and the agricultural regions of the Southeast and Midwest.

Attack 10 – School and Charter

The school transport segment has grown strongly in recent years and, therefore, demand for specific models for different applications. To meet the higher capacity demands, with lower acquisition and operating costs, Volare developed Attack 10 Escolar. The model is suitable for charter and school and university transport, with a capacity for 37 people and up to 54 people in the school version (in addition to the driver and assistant driver).
