Led by Italy, followed by the United Kingdom and Poland, electric bus registrations across European countries reached 8,141 units in the first half of 2026, an increase of 49% compared with 5,477 units in the same period of 2025.
The data, released by DVV Media Group as part of its European Bus Data Q2 2026 report, covers buses with a gross vehicle weight of more than 8 tonnes, excluding trolleybuses.
The 8,141 battery-electric buses registered during the first six months of the year represent approximately 69% of the total 11,819 units registered throughout 2025, according to DVV’s updated database.
The same source recorded 7,843 electric bus registrations in 2024.
These results follow strong year-on-year growth in the European electric bus market in 2025. Earlier data for 2025 showed 11,607 registrations, up 48% compared with 2024, with Yutong leading the manufacturer rankings, followed by MAN, Mercedes and BYD. The latest Q2 report has revised the total number of electric buses registered in 2025 upward to 11,819 units.
Electric Bus Registrations in Europe Grow 49% in H1 2026
Registrations of buses powered by alternative propulsion systems reached 11,315 units during the first six months of 2026, compared with 8,292 units in the first half of 2025.
Battery-electric buses accounted for 8,141 units of the H1 2026 total, compared with 5,477 units a year earlier.
Hybrid bus registrations increased from 1,348 to 1,449 units, while compressed natural gas (CNG) buses rose from 1,195 to 1,328 units.
Fuel-cell bus registrations also increased, from 272 units in the first half of 2025 to 397 units in H1 2026.
As a result, battery-electric buses accounted for 71.9% of the combined total of the four alternative-propulsion categories.
